Next Year...

Now that soccer is over(more on that later) I am looking toward next year and what each girl will do for classes.  Yes, it is only May but for my mind I need to get it organized and set before summer so I can enjoy some downtime!

So, before my schedule changes and I am working pretty much every day I am planning.

Of course I am going to use my Ultimate Homeschool Planner again.  I adore this planner.  It has everything I need and I will be so sad when I can't use it anymore.  You can buy it here.

The girls will be using a planner we found at Mardel's that we just bought here.  Hannah had this one last year and loved it so much Naomi wanted one as well!

Now that our planners are chosen I can move on to the curriculum for each girl.  We are of course sticking with Tapestry of Grace.  This year we are using Year 2.  I have loved this curriculum so much and we have all learned things I never knew growing up.  You should look into it if you are looking for History, Literature, Bible, Writing, Art,  Geography, Government, and Worldview.  Yes, it covers all of that!

For Math, Hannah will be taking College Algebra-I have gone as far with her as my mind will stretch!  Naomi will be doing Math U See Algebra 1.

Science we will be sticking with Apologia.  I haven't found anything we love as much as theirs.  Hannah will be doing Physics and Naomi will move into Physical Science.  I am so glad we found Apologia at the beginning of our homeschool journey!

Hannah will have a semester of Economics for Everybody from Compass Classroom.   While Naomi will be doing Visual Latin.

Naomi will be doing her last year of Growing with Grammar.  This is a solid program that is giving them a great base for understanding English.

At the moment, that is all I have.  I have more shopping to do for the little extras but at least I have a plan!  Next year Hannah will be a Junior and Naomi will be an 8th grader.

The plan for Bug is to stay in public school for now.  We don't know how long we keep her in public school because I can't see having her in middle school but that is for a different day.  For now, she is loving school and learning so much more than just math and reading.

Now, we just have to finish up this year!!

Homeschool Help

As a homeschooler I am always looking for ways to make this journey easier and better.  If I can find a tool that will help me teach and help my kids learn and they love it; all the better!

Virtual Homeschool Group is just that thing.

Virtual Homeschool Group is an online community that puts together classes for just about every subject and grade.  You can take Live classes or enroll for At Your Own Pace classes that have been recorded.  These classes teach, grade, and record those grades for you.  It is awesome ya'll.

And the best part?  It is FREE!

you heard me right.  This is a community helping the homeschool community.  You can of course donate to help the website with upgrades and the cost of keeping a website running but it is not necessary.  If you do donate then you are put into a pool for live classes that gives you first dibs on the life classes.  With our schedules live classes are not usually an option but we donate anyway.

The girls have take their Apologia Sciences through VHSG every year and they are an amazing help.
You should really check them out!

I am not receiving anything for this post.  I truly believe in this website and love how it has helped our homeschool and wanted to share!

Curriculum 2017-2018

I don't think I have posted for quite a while about the curriculum we are using.  With two having graduated, I find that life was slowing down quite a bit in the homeschooling department.  With Bug added back in, it is a bit busier!

This year we have Hannah in 10th grade, Naomi in 7th grade, and But in 2nd grade.  We haven't really changed curriculum much in the last few years because we found what really works for each one and we are sticking with it!

Hannah-10th:
Tapestry of Grace Year 1-History, Literature, Bible, Writing
Apologia Marine Biology
Math U See Pre-Calc
Dave Ramsey Personal Finance
Economics for Everybody (2nd Semester)
Fallacy Detective (2nd Semester)

Naomi-7th:
Tapestry of Grace Year 1-History, Literature, Bible, Writing, Arts/Crafts
Apologia General Science
Math U See Pre-Algebra

Bug-2nd:
Time4Learning-Language Arts, Science, Math, Social Studies
various workbooks for each subject and lots of play time, learning to play on her own, and working on setting up chores and being responsible

I think that is it.  But, who knows we may add more or change something mid-year!  That is the beauty of homeschooling-you can change what isn't working.

Changes keep coming

I fell off the blogging wagon not very long after I started again.  sigh  I would like to get posts caught up from May until now but that will take some time.  For now, I want to post about the most major change we have had this summer.

Bug came back to live with us!  We found out on a Thursday that she might be coming, the following Saturday it was decided for sure, and the following Thursday she moved back in.  Whew!  We decided that she would need her own room this time so we set up about renovating the storage room for her.  We had to clean it out first and that took almost a week!  Needless to say there were things in there that had not seen the light of day in over 10 years.  ahem  Moving on...

The renovations went well and we had several friends come over and help us.  We couldn't have done it without their help.  Her room took a few weeks to finish but it is a great room for her and is a sanctuary already.

We let her pick out the paint color-which was a little scary!  Thankfully the paint color was tempered by the flooring and her bedding.  I think we will be adding things here and there until we are satisfied with the final outcome.  For now, it is perfect.

The other big change, as if that one wasn't enough, is the fact that we are homeschooling her.  We had originally planned to put her in school since that is what she has been doing and was doing very well with it.  BUT, when I went to enroll her I was told NO.  We don't have guardianship yet and her grandpa isn't in the right district...so no public school.  I had been having some doubts as to putting her in such a large school after her very small one but was trusting that God would work it out.  He did!

It is going pretty well so far.  We are using Time4Learning and she is really enjoying it.  We will see what happens as the year progresses.

I will have to get pics up of the reno.  For now, here is Bug showing how happy she is to be back home with us.

New Seasons

I am lousy at keeping this blog up! Life is slowing down...kind of...so maybe?

Beth GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL LAST MAY. Yes, I needed to shout that at you. I am still freaking out a little bit over it even still. She even got into several colleges!! She had multiple offers to play soccer but decided against it. But, you know what? She GOT INTO COLLEGE! I didn't screw her up too badly!!

My first is grown.

Yikes. I am old!

She is such an amazing young woman and I am so blessed to be her mother. She started college last week for Pre-Vet and that has me gasping for air. Life is moving too quickly. Sarah is a Senior and is planning her life after high school. Missions work, here she comes!

In June of 2017 I will only have two kids at home (technically), they of course can stay as long as they need to. I will only have two to homeschool. My time is so short.

I love this phase of seeing their personalities blossom and their independence grow. They are going to be fantastic adults!

Sarah's Senior Pics will be coming in a few months. Aaagghh!! I don't want them to happen and I am crazy excited all at the same time.

Mi vida Spanish for You! Review

If you know me, you know that I love, love, love Spanish for You! It is the one and only Spanish curriculum that we have actually used and learned from.

Spanish for You! works.

Now, add to that that I have actually met Debbie Annett in real life last year and you have a fan girl right here! Debbie is the sweetest person and it made me love her curriculum even more.

But on to the review.

I have long loved Spanish for You! and Mi vida is no different. It is affordable, easy to use, and effective. (I typed that up and then realized that that phrase is ON the books! lol) But it is true.

Debbie has written Spanish for You! in a way that is easy for a non-Spanish speaking person(parent) to teach and learn alongside their student so that both are learning a foreign language. Or the student can take the reigns and learn all on their own! The Lesson Plans are laid out for you day by day -each day tellin gyou what needs to be done. Each week gives you the New Vocabulary for the week, New Common Words and Phrases, and any Homework for the week.

On a side note: for those that know me they can attest to the extent of my Spanish speaking abilities. I can order tacos, burritos, and chimichangas. But, I get really excited when I can order Barbacoa and put in an accent! That is my sum total of Spanish speaking abilities. So for me to say that Spanish for You! is easy for a non-Spanish speaking parent to use means it is really true.

There is NO guess work! The Levels for Spanish for You! re Grades 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8.

I love that about Spanish for You! It has taken the guess work out of my day by giving me exactly what I need. Guidance. I can open up the Lesson Guide on Sunday afternoon and highlight what my kids need to do for the week and NOT have to figure it out. It is all right there for me! Plus, it is a digitial download so I can print off the Lesson Guide for each child so they can do their own planning. Bonus!

We also love the Audio portion of Spanish for You! We can always go back to the Audio if we are unsure of how to pronounce something and there is plenty of practice to get it right. There are two options for the Audio-Debbie speaking spanish or a Native Spanish speaker. The Audio (mp3) recordings are invaluable. The other thing about the audio that I adore is that Debbie reads the page in Spanish. (not the entire page, just the Spanish portions) This has proven to be a huge asset because we can see the words in context and that makes them more applicable. To see the words and the pictures at the same time ingraine them more than just hearing them.

Now, the artwork is not very good you say? I think it is fantastic! They are simply drawn and yet still get the meaning across. Because the pictures are simple and black and white, the cost of the curriculum can be kept low. Don't we all want that? I know I do! When you print out the Flash Cards your kids can color them and get even more practice!

There is just so much good to say about this curriculum. The best thing to say is that my kids are learning Spanish and actually using it! They are understanding it and adding to their knowledge on their own because they are ENJOYING it.

If you want to check it out, head over to Spanish for You! and look at their MORE... page for FAQ's. All Themed Home use packages are $39.95-64.95. There is a 60 day money back GUARANTEE! You can't beat that.

The Themes are: Mi vida, Viajes, Fiestas, Estaciones but there are also FREE Mini Lessons, Worksheets, and Specials offered on the website.

**Disclaimer: I was given a Mi vida set in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own and a positive review is not guaranteed.

Homeschool Planet Review

In talking with several homeschooling moms lately I have discovered more than one thing in common with them. A lot of us hate to keep grades. Some of the ladies I talked with don't until high school and a very few didn't at all. They know what their kids are doing, what they know, and how well they know it; why assign grades?

Well, my nature is such that I need grades to fill in the forms. I like forms filled in and blanks to not be empty. Plus, it makes me feel better seeing all those forms filled in!

Unfortunately, it is rather difficult to find an online planner that is easy to use and has all the features you want. Homeschool Planet just might be the thing you are looking for.

Homeschool Planet includes:

*A Calendar View that lets you see anybody's or everybody's calendars at once

*A Planner View with a simple list of everything you need to do and when

*Automatic Rescheduling -- A class time changes? You miss a few days to illness or vacation? No problem! Homeschool Planet automatically reschedules all the affected classes and assignments.

*Separate logins for kids to view their assignments and check them off when completed.

*Daily Digest emails to everyone in your family with their own schedule, assignments, and chores for the day

*Email and text message reminders to help everyone stay on schedule (Some limits apply.)

*Lesson plans with assigments, web links, notes, and more

*Easy attendance tracking, grading and transcript creation

*To Do lists for everyone in your family

*Shopping lists (one each for Target, Safeway, etc.) that you can text to your spouse or have sent to your smartphone when on the go

*Widgets you can use to do research, send text messages, and more. These are really cool!

*Mobile Version -- Ability to view and edit (with some limitations) your calendar on SmartPhones and tablets

*Calendar sharing -- View the contents of your spouse's Google Calendar inside Homeschool Planet, and vice versa! This also works with Apple iCal and other online calendars.

*Lesson Copying -- Copy any lesson for use at a later time by another student.

Homeschool Classifieds is offfering a FREE 30 day trial! Head over Here and check it out. You DO need to be a member of Homeschool Classifieds but membership is FREE as well!

Now for what I thought of Homeschool Planet. I like it. It is fairly easy to use and doesn't have a ginormous learning curve like a few other programs out there. There are many scheduling options, re-scheduling, chores, appointments, multiple students, etc. to choose from. It is a pretty exhaustive list of options. Almost too many? I'm not sure. It would take a while to use this program to its fullest I think. Homeschool Planet would be your one-stop shopping for scheduling school and your life.

You can sign up to get Daily and Weekly Digests of the upcoming events. It can goes to email and I had it sent to my kids as well. It can be printed out for them to use as a guide for getting the work done. I thought that was pretty cool!

I am going to show you some pictures from my tablet of how things look and some of the options.

The picture above is pretty self-explanatory, really. You are creating an event! It is straightforward.

You choose what to add or Copy an Existing Class-that one is HUGE people!

Rescheduling assignments because life gets in the way can be a pain but Homeschool Planet makes is doable.

Display options for how your planner will look. I like options!

Calendar or Planner view, I can never stay on just one. Homeschool Planet offers both!

What I didn't like about Homeschool Planet was the mobile version. I am a gal that likes the desktop version of just about everything I see. I just do. It is a personal preference and I know that. Homeschool Planet does not offer a desktop version on a tablet at this point. There are options for the desktop not available on tablets and the set up looks different than the desktop version. Now, my husband will tell you that most people don't care about such things but I do and so I mention it. Just in case you care about that little thing as well! ****The Widgets are pretty cool on the desktop version-don't neglect checking those out!****

I wouldn't let that be a deterrant if you like what you see. Try it out!

If you want to order a subscription after your FREE Trial, it is $65 for 1 year. You can head over Here to sign up!

The Power in Your Hands Review

The Power in Your Hands Writing Nonfiction in High School by Sharon Watson is a God send in our home. I am notoriously bad at teaching writing so having something walk me through the process is great. We have tried several programs and they were fine they just didn't stick.

So when this review came up I was a little hesitant. But I decided to go ahead and try. It couldn't hurt, right?

I am happy to say that it didn't hurt at all. It was quite enjoyable in fact.

Here is a little about the program first.

Written by the same author who wrote Apologia Educational Ministries' popular middle school writing curriculum JUMP IN, this course is the natural next step for those who value college-preparatory material presented in incremental steps with a conversational tone.

Sharon Watson has the knack of teaching students with no prior writing experience in the same class with advanced writers. She knows when to introduce new material and how to keep it interesting. Both reluctant and eager writers will benefit from the way she reveals exactly how the "magic trick" of writing is done!

With over 100 daily lessons and complete instructions for 22 essays and reports, this is an engaging course students will enjoy--or not dread. And, more good news: the course almost teaches itself. Really.

Because writers come in all varieties, this course begins with basic writing skills so that inexperienced writers can catch up quickly on fundamentals, and then it smoothly merges them with their age-mates. More advanced writers will enjoy the Digging Deeper lessons designed specifically for them. No matter their writing level or their attitude toward writing, students will learn essay structures, vital writing tools, proofreading skills, and a confidence that comes from success.

Prerequisites: None.

Grammar not included.

Recommended as a companion volume: THE POWER IN YOUR HANDS: WRITING NONFICTION IN HIGH SCHOOL, TEACHER'S GUIDE. This teacher's guide includes all assignments and checklists, answers to chapter work, a year of engaging writing prompts, and a helpful grading guide.

The Student and Teachers books are all you need for this program. Yes, you will need the Teacher Book. It is full of teaching helps, ideas, evaluation forms, and so much more. I am not kidding, this book is going to take you some time to digest the wealth of information in it. It is invaluable. I have found myself re-reading sections several times. Unfortunately I never learned most of this when I was in school so it is pretty great to be teaching it to my kids now. Learning along side them is just about the greatest thing, isn't it?

The Student book is written in a conversational style with black and white pages. It is great for kids that get distractted by all the 'noise' on a page in other books. It is straight forward and to the point. Yet, there is humor written into it as well. It isn't dry, boring material that the student will quicikly tire of; it is engaging and divided into sections to make it digestable.

Something we have really enjoyed with this program are the 14 Minute Power Surges. These have taken the pressure off of writing and really made the girls think on the spot and get something on paper. The 14 Minute Power Surges are just what they sound like. The student is given a topic and they write about it for 14 minutes. It isn't graded; it is just written. Now, I think the farther you get into the program you end up using some of them and expanding on them for papers; we just haven't gotten that far yet. As soon as I said that they weren't going to be graded on spelling, grammar, etc. they felt freer to write. They started filling full pages in those 14 minutes and have a blast doing it. The prompts are given to the teacher in the Teacher book and are divided by month.

I also appreciate the lesson plans. They are divided by sections within the chapters and extra items for the teacher are written italics. I definitely felt like I had everything I needed to teach writing with this program. We will keep going with it and I can't wait to see the improvement in their writing later in the year. They are already more willing to write after just a short time using this than they have ever been. That's a win already!

The Power in Your Hands is available HERE and sells for $39.98 for the Student Book and $14.98 for the Teacher Book. The Power in Your Hands is written for grades 9-12.

Writing with Sharon Watson has many options for your student. Jump In, Writing with Fiction (High School), and The Power in Your Hands. Each one is found HERE. Check out the website for more ideas, FAQ's, and their blog.

Convention Time!

It is that time of year again...Convention Time! I love going to our state Convention (TPA Wichita.) I would probably love going to any state convention reallly, but ours is my favorite. I get to see homeschoolers from around the state and some friends that I only get to see once a year. I also get to put my hands on curriculum that I have been drooling over on the internet! I get to see vendors that I haven't met or haven't seen their products and I get to attend workshops that encourage, exort, convict, and teach.

It is just an all around great time!

But, it can be overwhelming the first few times. You register and start perusing the Vendor Hall in giddy anticipation. Then reality sets in and you start to panic. There are too many choices to look at and you can't rememeber what your friend told you you had to see so you put the information away for later.

Only later comes just a few days before Convention. A new level of panic takes over your body causing cold sweats and an upset stomach. There will be no way you are ready for Convention in time. None.

But wait. It doesn't have to be that way. Really, it doesn't. Convention can work FOR you not against you if you prepare and RELAX.

**One of the first things I do is register. That's easy enough, right? See, step one complete!

**Step two is to download and print the workshop schedule and vendor hall list. That's it. Don't do more than that if it is your first year. If you're a pro at conventions then take it away but do it quietly so the newbies don't freak out!

**Step three is to look at the workshop schedule with a pencil in hand. I start with a pencil because I always change my mind! I underline or circle the workshops that catch my eye the first time through. This will probably change the next time through and that's okay but for now just go with your initial choice. Then move to the Vendor Hall and do the same thing. Circle the ones you recognize or want to check out. Then leave them alone. Put it away and go play with your kids.

**Step four is a biggie. I enjoy this one but some don't and if you're a new homeschooler you might need to employ some help with this one. This step requires paper, pencils, erasers, time, and snacks! Depending on how many kids you have is how long this step will take. I have five kids so it takes me a while. Here's what you need to do.

--Make a list of the kids you are homeschooling. I like to have one piece of paper for each child because I make notes, change things, scribble, doodle, etc. Put the childs name on the top of the paper and you are ready to start. You will need to know your states requirements for classes so you know which subjects to cover but an easy way to start is 'reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic.' Once you have those basic subjects you can add in Spelling, Science, Foreign Language, or whatever subjects you want. Just make sure to cover the state regulations, please.

Here is are a couple of pics of what I have done in the past:

These pages are relatively clean compared to some years! I also have specific curriculum listed because I had been doing this for a while at this point. If you are new then you could just list out Math, Science, Language, with blanks beside them to be filled in later. Once you have this page filled out for each kid take a few minutes and just relax. *deep breath* Okay, how ya' doing? Are we good? Good! Now, it's time to start filling in the blanks. Chances are you know people that are already homeschooling and they have talked to you about the curriculum they use. Most of us start using things that were recommended to us-we may not keep using them but they are a good starting point. Fill in those spots. If you are borrowing the materials make sure to note that you have it so you won't waste time looking for it at convention. Still have some blank spots? That's okay. They will get filled in, I promise.

Stop there and grab a snack. I'll wait and have a snack myself.

Now, for the blank spots. Do you have some ideas for those? A couple of companies you want to look at? Write them down and circle them or star them or put question marks beside them; something that will help you remember to look for them. Don't have any ideas for the blank spots? Look at the list for the Vendor Hall and see if any of the vendors are what you are looking for. Visit their websites and check them out. If you like what you see write them down and highlight the booth on you list. If not, move right along.

As you are looking at the Vendor websites make sure you note any questions you have about their products on your list so you can ask them at convention. This is one of the best things about convention-talking to the publishers face to face and getting advice or help with their products.

Now, I would suggest making note somehow of what you need to buy along with what you already have. This is important because you don't want to end up buying something you don't need-not that I have done that or anything...ahem...keep reading, nothing to see here.

**Step five is taking us back to the Workshop schedule. Pull that baby back out and have a highlighter in hand. Read back over the workshops and see if you are still interested in your original choices. Yes? Highlight those puppies. No? Erase the marks and look for something else. Highlight the ones you want and make plans for shopping inbetween workshops. You are now ready to be inspired and encouraged!

**Step six is talk to your friends. I like this one!! See if they are going to the same workshops and sit beside each other. I know it sounds silly but everyone likes to see a familiar face, right? Plan to eat lunch with friends and even walk around the Vendor Hall together a few times. Especially if she is a veteran homeschooler!

**Step seven should happen just a few days before your convention. Get your notebooks, pens, pencils, and comfortable clothes picked out. Put everything into a binder or folder so it is all contained and easily pulled out. If you have one of those rolling carts be sure to bring it to haul your stuff around. If not, that's okay. Most conventions have a baggage check area where you can leave your items and come back for them later. Trust me, you DO NOT want to have to carry those bags around all day long. Get money for parking meters and lunch money ready. Scope out local places to eat so you're not scrambling during lunch break.

Don't forget to bring the list you made for each child with all your notes and questions handy. This baby will be pulled out, dog-eared, and marked up even more before convention is over!

When you finally get to convention you can relax and enjoy it because you have done all the prep work ahead of time.

Have any other suggestions for making convention going more enjoyable? Share them with all of us, please?!

Dave Ramsey's Foundations in Personal Finance for Homeschool Review

I received Foundations in Personal Finance for Homeschool by Dave Ramsey to review. I was thrilled and couldn't wait to start on it. I mean who doesn't want to do finances and math, right?!
Seriously though, if I had had this course in high school I might not have had the problems with money that I did. This course is a practical approach to personal finances that is interesting and enjoyable for students.
Here is a bit about the program:
Foundations in Personal Finance for Homeschool is a complete, turnkey, high school curriculum used by more than 15,000 homeschool students and designed to fully equip homeschool teachers with everything needed for a dynamic learning experience. We've included lesson plans, teaching delivered via video by Dave Ramsey and his team of experts, and a blended learning website, foundationsU.com. In addition, more than 35 activities are included which focus on providing 21st century personal finance knowledge and skills in a student-centered approach to learning.
We've updated our curriculum to include even more features and benefits for you and your students.
*Comprehensive, flexible, turn-key personal finance curriculum
*Teaching delivered via video by Dave Ramsey and his team of experts
*Homeschool version of student text with added scripture references
*150+ page digital teacher's guide
*Meets standards and benchmarks in all 50 states
*Meets all Jump$tart national standards
*Blended learning site with calculators, tools and resources
*4 new chapters: Introduction to Personal Finance, Life After High School, Careers and Taxes, and Giving
*35+ classroom activities focused on providing 21st century personal finance knowledge and skills in a student-centered, competency-based approach to learning.
Each chapter begins with a preview of what students will learn, key terms, and a pre-teach activity. In addition to the practical, real-world personal finance instruction, the student text is filled with graphs, charts, case studies, relevant statistics, quotes, and related scripture references. Throughout each chapter, students are prompted with journal questions that require them to pause and reflect on what they've learned. This student-centered approach is intended to promote ownership of their learning. At the end of each chapter, students are provided a variety of opportunities to apply, review, and assess their understanding.
Foundations in Personal Finance is designed in four distinct units. Each unit contains three chapters taught on video by Dave and his team.
The instructors creatively weave in humor and real-life stories that educate and reinforce sound principles of managing money. While watching on video, students follow along using the student text.
You can find Chapter Lists HERE as well as a FREE Sample Chapter. This program sells for $119 HERE and includes Digital Teachers Edition, Instructional Videos, Student Text, and foundationsU.com blended learning site. This course is for grades 9-12 for a semester. Find out more on the website.

Instructional Videos

This set of five DVDs offers more than 12 hours of engaging classroom instruction taught by Dave Ramsey, Rachel Cruze and Chris Hogan.

Student Text

The Foundations in Personal Finance for Homeschool student text is a comprehensive, 288-page student softcover consumable. It provides students an opportunity to learn, practice, and apply important personal finance knowledge and skills. The 12 chapters are aligned with the National Standards for Financial Literacy.

This softbound Student Text is sturdy and will hold up to use. The text is easy to read and not overwhelming visually. The chapters are laid out in a manner that is appealing and easy to follow. I actually love the way it is set up. At the beginning of each chapter is a Before You Begin section. There are Learning Outcomes, Key Terms, and Measure Your Progress to help you stay on track. You then get into the chapter that is further divided into Sections. Each section has questions to answer as well as ideas to help implement things learned. After you finish the chapter there is a Chapter Summary and Money in Review to complete.

The DVDs are engaging and the material delievered in a way that is fun. The lessons are around 15 minutes each but you will want to watch more than just the one. Really. I didn't expect to have fun while learning about finances. That just doesn't even seem possible but Dave Ramsey and his team have come up with a way to do it.

This set up helps to reinforce what the student is learning and the content makes it relevant to their lives right now. Teaching our children responsiblity with their money is hard enough, we don't need boring out of date curriculum getting in the way. Foundations in Personal Finance for Homeschool is NOT that program. It is completely in sync with where kids are and helps them get to where they need to be.

I can't recommend Foundations in Personal Finance for Homeschool enough. Every student NEEDS to go through this course to help them avoid the pitfalls that come from not understanding how to make their money work for them.

**I received Foundations in Personal Finance for Homeschool in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed are my own and there is no promise of positive reviews.

Waiting 'till the last minute

Our homeschool group has been putting on plays for the last three years(this one included.) Well, that's not exactly true. Our group's founder Mrs. L used to write plays for our group that were sweet and wonderful. Then we quit doing them for a while. I'm not sure why exactly bu t we did.

Then a few years ago we started having a choir class. We performed a few times and it went really well despite resistance from the kids! But a few years of that and the kids refused to sing anymore. ;-) So, we found a script and put on our first play.

It was fantastic. I'm not exagerating either. The kids were awesome. The next year was even better with cosutmes and lights. They nailed it. We weren't sure about it towards the end and were pretty nervous but they pulled out all the stops and did a fantastic job.

This year was one of the hardest years yet. We had Seniors that were taking classes at college, sports schedules, vacations, etc. to work around and ended up not having a practice with all cast members there for over a month. It was maddening. Three weeks before the show went up they were still needing line cues. A lot of them.

To say we were terrified and frustrated was putting it mildly. We talked about postponing but couldn't find a date. We talked about canceling but had already paid quite a bit to put it on. We were stuck rehearsing a play that was causing the directors no end of stress and grief. It was not a fun experience for the most part. Of course there were fun, silly moments that helped us limp along and kept us going.

The kids did end up doing a really good job but I have to wonder how much better it would have been if they had showed up and worked harder. (isn't that the question for a lot of things in life?)The directors can only do so much and then it is up to the actors.

I was very glad when it was over this time. More so than usual. The kids are great and are so talented and this play was stinkin' hard. I give them props for learning so many lines and stage directions. They are a great group of kids to work with. Let's just avoid talking about next year's play for a while!

Sets, Sets, Sets

This year for our play with our homeschool group we are using sets.  Sounds exciting, right?  It should be only we can't find any already made that we can use.  They won't fit our needs or they won't fit the stage.  Since we have 33 kids in the play this year it makes for a crowded stage.  Yeah, you read that right.  Last year we only had around twenty-something and the year before just 18.  It's cool that so many wanted to do it but it is a lot of bodies to keep focused.

Anyway, back to the sets.  The play we are doing lies heavily on entrances, exits, and certain doorways being there so we had to design them.  Okay, I did but with hep from the script and my co-director.  Once we got the plans drawn I went to Mr. Magic, a.k.a. Steven, and asked him to help build them.  He's pretty handy and is used to interpreting my ideas!  This time, however, proved a challenge.

The stage was such that we had to alter the plans a bit and make it fit-not perfectly but just okay.  We had a small budget to buy supplies but that meant we had to get the cheapest 2x4's they sold and work around their imperfections.

It was a work in progress, let me tell you.  IN all we probably spent on the upside of 20 hours building, repairing, and reworking them.  It was a bit frustrating but we did it!  The next set we build will be...ahh who am I kidding?  It will be just as hard and we will spend just as much time on it!  It's a good thing we work so well together.  ;-)

Yes, these are all of Bethany and Steven working because when he and I were working there was no one to take pictures!  I hope I got some of the finished project.  They were simple but worked really well.

Another play

Each year, for the past few anyway, our homeschool group puts on a play. I direct them and have awesome moms that help out. We started out pretty simple the first year and worked our way up. Last year we had full costumes with minimal sets. This year we have full sets and costumes and lights and sound. aagghhh did you hear my head explode?

Yeah, this play is hard. The lines are hard. The costumes are hard. The sets are hard. It is hard. Did I already say that?

Since we only practice one time a week for about an hour and a half my co-director and I get a little stressed out. We had to call a few extra practices for the month of December to get lines memorized and sets worked with. The sets are still waiting to be built since Steven and I are building them. We have the plans but need a little bit warmer weather than 12* to work with tools in the garage. ;-)

They will get built. But we only have six more practices before show and I am freaking out. A lot actually. Tomorrow's practice will hopefully be better than the last one. lol

I can't wait to see the kids up there in their costumes performing for everyone. They will be great, of course!

See the Light Art Projects-Dreams of Joseph Review-Mosaic Reviews

It is no secret that we are not really artists. I can barely draw stick figures, a few of the girls can draw a few things; but we are pretty inept when it comes to real painting. I wish we could but it just might never happen.

However, See the Light Art Projects might help us get a little better at it!

I was a little wary of this review just because we are so bad at art but was kind of excited to try as well. We were going to give it our all no matter what. The disc we received was The Dreams of Joseph. We loved it.

Here is a little about it:

Dreams of Joseph

In the style of Marc Chagall!

Watch and Produce Your Own Masterpiece
in 4 Step-By-Step Lessons with Master Artist Pat Knepley!

DREAMS OF JOSEPH is the sixth in a series of ART PROJECTS that advance skills and learning as students complete wonderful works of art in the style of a variety of famous artists.

DREAMS OF JOSEPH includes an in-depth Art History focus on the style of Marc Chagall, explores related Art Elements and Art Principles, and uses a variety of media. Biblical integration is woven into every single lesson!

DREAMS OF JOSEPH is geared for ages 10 +. The 4 lesson DVD runs approximately 1 ½ hours, but the student should allow approximately 3 to 4 hours to complete this fabulous work of art!

Synopsis of each lesson:

1. Outline Key Elements in Black (29 minutes)

2. Paint the Background (33 minutes)

3. Paint Joseph's Colorful Robe (22 minutes)

4. Finish Your Painting with Joseph's Dream Details (24 minutes)

But this description doesn't do it justice. I have always thought that Art History was a little boring and would check out when teachers would start in on it. Sad but true. Not with See the Light. Pat has a way of integrating Chagall history in an interesting way that makes it relevant to today and keeps the viewer waiting for more. I was so intrigued with learning about Chagall life that I didn't realize we were learning Art History until the first session was over! We all were remembering and talking about the different aspects of his life and some of the paintings Pat showed us. Plus, we had the black-line beginning of our painting.

We were all pretty thrilled with what we saw already.

We kept watching the videos and added to our paintings. We had a glorious time painting and learning together. I did include all of my children in this; but only the 8yo, 11yo, 14yo, and 15yo's painted. But the 3yo was completely mezmorized with Pat and the paintings on the videos.

We laughed our way through our struggle to recreate what Pat was working us through. The instructions were clear and really easy to follow-if we could you can-and each process was step by step. It really couldn't have been any easier to follow unless Pat was to come to our house and do it for us! We just had a great time learning to paint this picture.
We were thrilled that we ended up with paintings when we were finished. Plus, we learned aobut Chagall's life, paintings, and more about the Bible story of Joseph. Pat weaves the Bible into each session in a natural way that makes you want to read the stories again.
I was very impressed with See the Light Art Projects. The quality is outstanding and is well worth the $14.99 for this disc. You can purchase each Project individually or in a set for High School Credit for $99. Head over HERE to see all the wonderful products See the Light has to offer.
