Field Trip

Our homeschool group took a field trip to the Eisenhower Museum today.  Steven was able to take off work and come with us and I am so glad he did.  We had a great time!

I can't wait to share the wonderful pictures but they are on my phone! lol

If you don't know about Eisenhower I strongly suggest you learn more about him.  He was a man of integrity and strong moral character.  Steven and I are searching for a biography to read and learn more about our Kansas native.

Of course we are getting ready for World War 1 in our Tapestry studies so we will be learning more about him then as well!  I love it when history invades our every day lives!!

Impromptu Field Trip

On a trip in May we stopped off at a place I have seen for years and had never stopped to see it.  Steven agreed and we stopped to investigate...

It was an old schoolhouse.  Perfect right?

We were all in homeschool heaven!  I have had the pics on my phone for forever and am finally getting them posted.

Isn't it beautiful?

Field Trip!!

Our homeschool group took a field trip today to the Kansas Cosmosphere.  It was a great field trip.  We spent the day there touring the museum, which is phenomenal, watched an imax movie, went to the planetarium, and learned about rockets.  We had a great time with only one minor mishap.  The fire alarm went off and we had evacuate our group.  But come to find out we were the only ones to evacuate!  Our small portion of our group were the only ones outside.  It was kind of funny when we found out that it was only a false alarm.

We were completely worn out when we got home.

Unfortunately Bean was sick and couldn't go.  Sunshine stayed home with her so that the rest of us could go.  Steven promised to take us back so we could all go.  It's going to have to be a long time away because I'm still tired from it!

Pretty Things

My blog is being scraped again.  If you are reading this on a website other than www.crazyhomedaze.blogspot.com you are reading a stolen copy of my content.

Our homeschool group took a field trip to a local business that creates beautiful pieces of art with glass.  It was amazing to see all the different pieces in the store and more than a little disturbing to see all of our children walking around amongst those very expensive pieces!

Here are a few that caught my eye.

No, we didn't buy anything.  We couldn't afford the ones we really liked!  They are beautiful just not very practical in a house with two doing gymnastics all the time.  They are still pretty to look at though.  :)

Blessing Others

My blog is being scraped again.  If you are reading this on a website other than www.crazyhomedaze.blogspot.com you are reading a stolen copy of my content.

It has become a tradition for our homeschool group to make Christmas cards at our annual craft day and then distribute them at a local nursing home after caroling.  A tradition that I love.  Our kids love it as well.  The first year some of our students weren't too sure about talking to strangers, but they quickly got over it when the elderly residents had tears in their eyes.  Sometimes the tears came from listening to young people sing Christmas carols to them.  Sometimes it came from the gift of a handmade card.  And sometimes it came from a hug given by a sweet child that took time to ask their name and visit with them for a few minutes.

What a blessing it is for us to be able to go and minister to these precious souls at Christmas time.  What stories could we hear if we would take the time to listen?  What wisdom could we glean from lives that were lived in such different times than ours?  A generation is passing away and the lessons they learned are passing with them because we don't take the time to listen to them.

I encourage you to visit a nursing home near you and bless the residents with your presence and attention.

Remember, whatever you do to the least of these...

Our Field Trip

Two weeks ago we went to a local castle.  We have been studying the medieval times and focused on castles quite a bit.

Who doesn't like castles, right?  It just seems so distant to the kids with no way of making it real.  That's when I remembered that we have a castle in our hometown!

Instant field trip.  Just add a camera and we were set to go.

It is just gorgeous sitting on the edge of a river.

This picture doesn't do the stained glass justice.

They have added modern conveniences like ac and electricity!

On top of the tower there were five different animals in stone.

The crenels and merlons.

Interesting architecture.

We even got to incorporate our Latin studies!
A cool little gargoyle!

We invaded!
The gatehouse.
Can you see the girls in there?  They are in the shadows!
We had a good time touring the grounds even though we didn't get to see the inside.  We will call at a later time to see if we can tour the inside.  Of course I will take more pictures!

What was I thinking?

The weather was so beautiful on Wednesday that I thought it would be a great idea to go for a walk.  But why waste time on a meaningless walk when we had so much to do?  The answer...walk to the library to return our books and pick up more.  We could count it as a Field Trip and P.E.

Perfect!

Everyone found their backpacks, loaded them up with the books that were probably late, put on our sneakers and started merrily on our way.  Now, we walk often around our neighborhood and ride our bikes to soccer practice more often than not; so this didn't seem like that big of deal.  After all, it only takes a few minutes to get to the library when we drive--how hard could it be?

We finally leave the house after much gnashing of teeth cooperation and harmony and start our trial journey.  The time: 9:20am.

After turning a few corners and leaving our neighborhood I look ahead to the first major intersection and am frightened by what I see-the light so far away.  It looks miles away.  On top of that N-our 5yo did not wear sneakers like I demanded encouraged; she wore pretty (useless) flip-flops.  Niice.

We finally made it to the corner and that's when I knew...I was in way over my head!  But, instead of admitting defeat and turning around, I lied white-washed the situation and told them that we were almost half-way there.

With no end in sight and my load becoming heavier and heavier, I whined asked the girls to carry some of the books.  We split them up and my load was lighter; for about two blocks.  The whining started again-mine not theirs.  They are young and in shape; I am old and not in shape.  What did they have to complain about?

A lot, actually!

About this time I called my dear, sweet husband and told him what we were accomplishing attempting when he promptly told me that we were crazy a little too ambitious.  His next words were straight from the wonderful husbands handbook: "Call me if I need to come and get you."  I love that man!

We finally arrived at the next major corner and looked in the direction of the library when my youngest exclaimed, "I can't even see it!"  Yeah, I know me either.  But let's focus on the positive here, okay?  This time we really were half-way there.

But...

We were pretty much done.  We kept walking with the thought that we would get to the library and call Steven to come and rescue us.  That was the only thing that kept us me going.

We made it to the library at 10:30am.  Yup, you read that right.  Awful disgusting sad, isn't it?

The library was a welcome haven until they told me how much the fines were and then I couldn't wait to get out of there.  The threat suggestion to never check out books or movies again might have been mentioned by the newly blistered momma.  But, I can't be sure because I wasn't really paying attention.  I was calling Steven and getting frustrated because he wasn't answering his phone.  What was he doing anyway, working? sheesh!

I finally decide that we have to start for home; so we set off.  It was 10:55am. Is it possible for the way home to be longer?  Well, it was.  Seriously.  We only made it a few blocks when the kids started dropping like flies sitting down in protest.

See her in the distance?  She sat down and waited for us.  You can't see it in the distance because it is too far away; but the corner is up there somewhere!
We are getting closer to her!
But another one dropped...
She was moaning and gasping for air.  I thought someone would call 911 on us!
So not happy with her momma.  ;-)
Just being silly because she was so tired.
She didn't want to go on.  Come to find out, her shoes were too small!
Pretty much done.  'Nuf said.
We trudged onward toward the intersection and the Dillons that was just on the other side of it.  We were stopping no matter what.  I had bribed promised the kids a treat for their good somewhat okay behavior and I just wanted to stop walking.  I was such a good desperate mom that I bought them all their own sodas!  AND candy.  Then I thought of ice cream...so I found some ice cream sandwiches that only had six in a box and bought them.  Turns out two of the kids didn't want any so the other three of us inhaled ate their sandwiches as well as our own.

Ice cream, warm weather, and extreme physical distress does not equal happy tummies.  Add soda to that and you have a volatile mix!  At 11:40am we started walking limping along again.  We I wanted to quit.

But we had to keep going because we 'almost half-way there'!  As the high of sugar wore off, the complaining started again.  Mine, not theirs.

A few blocks later, the girls started falling onto the grass whenever there was a shady spot.  I was afraid if I sat down that I would never get back up!  We kept walking at a snails pace.  I know it was a snails pace because an extremely old man on an ancient bike whizzed past us like we were standing still.  :(

We finally saw 'our corner' and more than a few "Thank you, Jesus's" flew about.  We were spurred on by the sight of the road leading to our street.  It was short-lived.  The corner seemed to get farther away the more we walked.  But we finally made it.  To the corner.  And almost didn't make it up the little hill on the other side.  It was just so high!

After the corner it is three extremely long blocks to our turn.  I think I got two more blisters on that stretch of road alone.

Our corner came into view and we were eating up the pavement at one step every minute and a half.  The 5yo asked if we were ever going to get home.  I wasn't sure.

It didn't feel like it.  And even if we made it home, would we be able to walk normally after this?

We did make it home, barely, and we all collapsed onto couches, chairs and the floor.  No one even ate.  Twenty minutes after we made it through the door, at 12:45pm, two of four were asleep and the other two were on their way.

By the way, it was 5.2 miles and we haven't walked normally since!

Catching up...

This picture is from our last snow.  It was just enough to leave evidence of the cardinals that yell at us when we don't put out bird seed for them!

Can you hear the giant sucking sound coming from the children in this house??  heehee

Our field trip to Cici's was great!  We got to make pizza and they gave them worksheets to do.  :)

At the end of the day, Maggie is just a big baby!   She didn't even ask to get up on the couch, she just climbed up there with us and made herself at home.

A Whole Week?

Has a whole week gone by since I blogged? Wow! I guess a lot has gone on since then. Or maybe not. :)

Let me think...

I went to another library sale! Yes, another one. I found some wonderful books to use for school and some books that I bought just because they were old!

We celebrated a birthday with cousins.

Our refrigerator broke. Well, okay, it was just the ice and water in the door. But that is really important to us. :) It was leaking all over the kitchen floor. The carpet was soaked. Whe the dh went to turn the water off to the fridge, the handle broke off in his hands and water started pouring all over the storage froom floor. We found the main shut off valve for the water and fixed the handle/valve. We have not, however, fixed the valve on the refrigerator and we still don't have water or ice in the fridge. :(

We started week 12 in Tapestry of Grace. We are still loving it by the way!

We had soccer practices in the freezing cold. Seriously.

We went to a Pumpkin Patch for a field trip and froze our hinies off. I made the girls wear two shirts and they wore their heavy coats and they were still cold! We had fun and then got in the car and ate lunch on the way home!! Now I have pumpkins rotting on my front porch. :)

We had a virus in the house that I thought was strep. For two days our second oldest was either in bed or on the couch sleeping. It was not strep, I don't think.

We got out the long sleeve shirts, wore them and then got the short sleeves out again!

We went grocery shopping. That may not sound like a big deal; but, we hadn't gone shopping in over two weeks and we were down to nothing.

We went to the Fall Festival at our church. It was fun. They brought in a 'bird man' who runs a refuge for injured birds. He brought owls to show us. One of them flew right over our heads. It was so beautiful. Our oldest was enthralled.

We are getting ready for more soccer games, tomorrow. Just two more and we are done for the season! WOOHOO!

I think that about sums up the last week. I have some more pictures but don't have them on the laptop. So, they will have to wait until I get them from the main computer.

OH, I also entered a bunch of blog contests and won one of them. I will make a seperate post about that one tomorrow morning!

Two days in a Car with 4 kids and a sister, then a Mom!

On Wednesday morning at o'dark thirty my sister, my kids, and I set off for Oklahoma. Why, you say did we do that? Well, that is a very long story! I will tell a very shortened version...

First, here is a picture of the morning God made to greet us.

After the beautiful sunrise, we set off for Oklahoma. My mother was scheduled to be in Enid around 7pm that evening and since we had the whole day to kill while waiting for her, we decided to go to our old hometown to visit. It sounded like a great idea at the time!

The trip down to Hinton was great! The kids were in a great mood and we made fabulous time! We arrived in Hinton and 'toured' our old haunts and oooed and awed at all the changes to the town. Then we stopped at Hobbs, a store that will forever be in my memory as the BEST place to get drinks and candy. We ordered Cherry Salty Dogs. MMMM They were just as good as we remembered them. The kids, however, did not like them as much as we did. The youngest stated that she would throw up if she ate more of it!!

After Hobbs we went to Red Rock Canyon to hike. It took a while and let me just say that my kids are 'city kids' through and through!

When we were done hiking we went to see an old friend of Robin's in a neighboring town. We were doing okay until during the visit, the kids started losing it. We realized that it was almost 2:30 and the kids hadn't eaten since 6:30 that morning. We somewhat promptly left and went back to Hinton to get lunch.

On the way, we spoke with our mother and her ride to bring her home had not picked her up yet. UGH We sat down to eat and our step-dad called and said that we needed to drive to Dallas to get our mom. She was stranded in the hotel lobby.

Long story very short, we only ended up driving to Ardmore to get her and we spent the night in a hotel, went swimming in our clothes and then drove all the way home on Thursday.

It was quite an adventure! Come to think of it, when Robin and I travel it almost always turns into an adventure!!

Here are some of the pics from along the way.

I love it when they sleep in the car! :)

Doesn't she look comfortable? !

We saw a lot of this.

I think farming will forever be in our blood. Scenes like this never fail to make me smile.

We saw tons of these.

I took this for Robin, kind of like therapy. :}

We tried all day to get pictures of the rivers we went over. Usually, we were too late in getting the cameras out!

AHH, the red dirt of Oklahoma. I had forgotten just how red it is.
