There is an interesting discussion going on in one of the email groups I belong to. They are discussing Oprah! Why, do you ask? Well, because she is wildly influential for one.
She is so influential that she can turn a book into a bestseller overnight. She can also propagate heresy as well.
Let me just say here and now that I have and will continue to watch her show when I see something of interest on there. Let me also say that I believe that she spouts a false doctrine and should NOT be listened to on any matters of faith or religion.
With that being said, I think that of just about everyone on T. V. today. There are some good Bible believing people on the tube; but, they are few and far between.
As I was reading The Word this morning, I came across this passage and thought that it applied to the discussion and the world today in general.
Here it is:
2 Timothy 3:1-7
"But mark this: There will be terrible times int he last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather that lovers of God - HAVING A FORM OF GODLINESS BUT DENYING ITS POWER. Have nothing to do with them. They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning by never able to acknowledge the truth."
Ouch! Unfortunately, I fit into a great number of those categories. God is working on me!
Does this passage sound familiar? Can't you just see society in this passage? What kind of problems are we having in schools today because children are allowed to be disobedient to their parents? Without love-babies are aborted because of the lack of real Agape Love for someone other than ourselves.
'Having a form of godliness, but denying its power' That is soo Oprah and others in positions of power. She claims Christianity but completely denies the Power that comes with it. Let me be clear, you can not pick and choose what you want to believe about the Bible. It is all true or it isn't. Take it or leave it. It has no value when you just pick what is easy and fits into your lifestyle. Sound familiar?
It is not just Oprah. Look at the politicians! Several are claiming Christianity, yet they allow unborn babies to be ripped apart in their mothers wombs. Or they allow same sex marriages. This is not what the Bible teaches.
Are we guilty of the same thing? YES. I think it is human nature to try and make things easy for ourselves.
2 Timothy 4:3 says it very well. "For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away form the truth and turn aside to myths."
WOW! Can you see any resemblance in these verses to society today? Scary, isn't it?
The way around it? Jesus said, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6
