TOS Review Kinderbach

It has always been a struggle in our home to get the kids to learn an instrument or even just learn music.  We are a fairly musical family and have music playing almost constantly; but we haven't done a good job of learning to read music and play instruments.  :(  So, if there is anything that can make that job easier I am all for it!
Photobucket

Our review for The Crew this time was for KinderBach, a music program geared for ages 3-7.  From the website:

The KinderBach curriculum is a proven teaching method which gives children a solid music foundation, aligned with the MENC National Standards for Pre-K, that can translate to any instrument.  Basics are basics and KinderBach covers them using language children understand.  Youngsters will learn music vocabulary, note reading, rhythm, physical technique, ‘do, re mi’ singing, listening skills and music composition plus the joy in making music.

The KinderBach program is divided into Six Levels that are further divided into four sessions each.  The segments are around 5 minutes a piece and are easily watched alone or all together.  Some days we watched only one to review a new concept and other days we watched them all at once.  It is easily adaptable to what works best for your family!
Photobucket

KinderBach is full of cute characters and catchy music.  There are videos, puppets, coloring pages, piano playing, and using household items as instruments.  It's a little something for everyone.  I have caught several of the girls singing the tunes throughout the day!

At first my kids were a little put off that they didn't learn to 'play the piano' right away.  I had to convince them that learning Music Theory was very important and would help them later in learning to play any instrument.  That's what this program does.  It teaches Music Theory in a way that is understandable to kids and fun to boot!

What will my child know at the end of this program? Will my child be able to learn another instrument?
At the end of the KinderBach program your child will have a strong musical foundation that he/she will be able to use as a springboard to any music instrument.  Your child will:
  1. Know all the notes on the piano by location and letter name
  2. Be familiar with the grand staff,
  3. Read some individual notes on staff and all notes by pattern on staff,
  4. Understand and read rhythms from eighth to whole notes,
  5. Have improved listening skills so that he/she can interpret rhythms, intervals and patterns heard.
  6. Play familiar melodies,
  7. Play hands together or separately,
  8. Have a working music vocabulary,
  9. Understand basic composition methods
That's a whole lot of musical knowledge, isn't it?  We haven't made it all the way through this program yet, but we are going to try to get there before our review time is over.

If you want to check out KinderBach for yourself, head on over to their website and look around for a while.  Better yet, sign up for a FREE two-week trial and try it out!  To sign up for this online membership it is $95.88 for a year long membership.  That works out to be $7.99 a month.  Or you can do the monthly membership for $19.99.  Or you can buy a CD package that starts at $40.45.  Check out their website for more details and options on packages.  Don't forget to check out the extra materials they offer to go along with this program.

Dancin' with the Dinosaur

I don't often put music on here because I don't much care for listening to dozens of different songs throughout all the blogs I read in a given day.  But that's just me!

However, this song was playing in our car the other day and an interesting conversation ensued.  H-my 8yo asked what he was talking about and why he would dance with a dinosaur. lol  The music was turned off and a 15 minute conversation about right and wrong, black and white, and having a conscience were thoroughly discussed.  It was amazing to see the light in their eyes as they understood the concept of listening to the Holy Spirit and why some would call having a conscience a dinosaur.

After the conversation they all agreed that they always wanted to walk with the dinosaur!  ;-D

TOS Review Go Go Kabongo

I love it when you find a website that has games, fun, and learning! It makes my life as a mom and homeschooling teacher that much easier.  This review has brought just such a website to us.  Go Go Kabongo is a website filled with fun games, crazy characters, and learning.

Photobucket

Here is a little from the website:

Get children thinking—and reading—with exciting online games that they love to play! Unlike other learning games, Kabongo’s brain-boosting activities were developed by a cognitive psychologist and based in cognitive development research to help kids become more confident readers.
Kabongo games do not teach with “right” and “wrong” answers. Instead, they guide children toward better thinking by using an exciting, engaging game design. Children use a wide variety of critical-thinking and problem-solving strategies to play and progress, including these skills that are essential for reading:
Cognitive Image
  • Attention and focus: Children must be able to focus on important clues and rule out other distracting factors in order to become efficient readers.
  • Working Memory: Children must be able to keep information in their short-term memories long enough to make sense of a word, sentence, or paragraph. For example, repeating ideas back to themselves can help kids remember and make sense of key messages.
  • Processing: Children use different “processing” techniques to derive meaning from what they see and hear.
    • Successive processing: In order to decode words effectively, children have to remember the letter sounds in order and assemble them into a whole. The same is true with words and sentences.
    • Simultaneous processing: As readers advance, they move more quickly through words and passages, “reducing” and organizing the information to make sense of it faster. For example, they begin to recognize certain words, taking each one in as a whole instead of letter by letter. Or, they repeat back the essence of a paragraph, culling out the less important ideas and focusing on the most important concepts.
Visualization: When children are presented with more information than they can easily remember, creating a mental picture often helps them process what is being described.
  • Planning: Fluent readers take many factors into account each time they read. They use what they know about individual letters and words, their context in the passage, and their relationship to outside experiences. As children learn to read, they evaluate and apply various strategies, developing planning skills for future learning.
  • Comprehension: All of the skills and strategies above support a child’s ability to derive meaning from what he or she reads. Good comprehension is essential to all kinds of learning, from language arts to science, social studies and more.
This website has been so much fun for my 6yo.  She has just loved it.  It has helped her on her eye hand coordination, reading skills, following directions, and creating characters.  She asks to get on the site daily and then I have to tell her to get off the computer!

Kabongo map

She has this to say about Go Go Kabongo:

"I like the skate things cause you get stickers and get to decorate with them.  I like the comic maker, twister top, design a door, and there's lots of games.  It's really, really, funner than fun!"

I'm guessing that she liked it, a lot!

Kabongo home

This website has so many options for playing that you couldn't do them all in one setting.  Ok, maybe you could but you would be sitting there for a while.  :)  There are games that require the player to follow directions in order to spell a word, navigate obstacles to spell words, or just build a skate park and practice some moves.  The cast of characters are crazy, unique, and just plain funny.

Photobucket
This website is geared for kids ages 4-7.  My 9 year old played around with it and it was a little young for her but she had fun playing some of the games and has asked to play some of them even still!  Check out the different things to do on this page, and then check out the FAQ's page to get answers to any questions you may have.  Also check out the system requirements to be sure your computer is compatible with the website.

That all sounds great, but how much does it cost you ask?  Great question!

Your child can start playing GOGO KABONGO! today for free--at no charge, with full access to Laughter Lake’s brain-boosting games and activities. You can expand the learning with two additional habitats – Galaxy Gardens and Twister Top which are $4.95 each. SPECIAL OFFER: SIGN UP NOW AND YOU GET THE GALAXY GARDENS HABITAT FREE! Hurry - this offer is only available for a limited time.

We had a great time reviewing this website and I know the rest of The Crew did as well.  Head over to The Crew Blog to check them out!

TOS Review Zeezok Publishing

Don't you just love it when you can use movies for school and you aren't just killing time?  I have recently discovered a new product that will make movie watching a truly educational event.

Photobucket

Zeezok Publishing has come out with movie guides that are full of great questions and fun exercises.  Here is a little bit from their website:

Welcome to Zeezok Publishing! Established in 2003, we believe "It is better to build children than to repair men." To that end we strive to provide quality literature and educational books for use in training the next generation. We trust our products will assist you in developing your family's love for God and country.

That is just a bit about the company.  They offer many kinds of books, penmanship books, government, character training, etc.  There are several things to ooh and aah over!

The item we reviewed is thez-guides to the movies  The movie we reviewed was A Man For all Seasons.  This was a movie that fit right into the time in history we are studying so I jumped on the chance to review it.  The z-guides are great tools to aid in critical thinking as your student watches a particular movie.  Each guide is filled with questions about the movie separated into sections.  For our movie choice the questions were separated into character studies, questions to research the historical period, a writing assignment to further the understanding of the time, crossword puzzle, ant art project, a world view activity, and a family discussion page.  That's quite a bit packed into this package!  But that's not all.  Also included is the answer key, the scoring guide on each page, a How to Use page, and a Topic Overview so there is no doubt in how to use this guide.

This great movie guide is for sale on the Zeezok website for only $12.99.  It comes on a CD so you can print off the pages you need when you need them.  They also sell the movie to go with this z-guide for $15.98.  There are many other titles of z-guides to choose from and they range from upper elementary/middle school age up through high school.  There are also a few z-guides that are available as an e-book for an instant download.  Prices vary according to titles, so check them all out.

Check out this page for a list of all the great z-guide titles Zeezok offers.  There are many other titles that this homeschool momma will be utilizing over the course of our school years!  We use movies to supplement and to add another dimension to our studies and these guides add a whole other level to this option for us.  The critical thinking skills utilized in answering the questions is an invaluable tool for all students to have.  The questions also opened up dialogues between the whole family that we might not have thought of if not for the questions in the z-guide.  Be sure to check out the descriptions of the movies to look for any objectionable material or material that wouldn't be appropriate for young viewers.

If your family likes to use movies as another avenue for learning, I highly recommend the Zeezok z-guides.

They are worth checking out.

If you want to see what movies other Crew members reviewed, head on over to The Crew Blog and check them out.
