New School Year

We started school on Monday, August 12th. I guess that's kind of early according to some but it works for us. ;-)

Last week was a great week. All the kids got their homework done each day and attitudes were pretty good the whole week. I was very encouraged at the start of our new year. The first two days of our second week have been just as great. Yay for us!!

Here are our curriculum choices for this year:

Making my life easier

As a homeschool mom of five I am busy. I have a Sophomore, a Freshman, a 6th grader, a 3rd grader, and a 3yo. That's a lot of school work to keep track of.

Plus, with the high schoolers I NEED to keep track of their subjects, grades, activities, and such. It is a little intimidating and a lot overwhelming.

So much so that I have been known to ignore it until it is piled up and hours worth of work. Not good.

But I was able to review My Home School Grades with Mosaic Reviews and my life has never been the same!

I truly love this program. It is so easy to use. I have tried other programs that have a manual longer than the phone book and more complicated than html coding. I couldn't figure them out. I gave up almost before I got started.

MHSG is so not like that. It is sleek, simple, and they have stellar customer service. I entered a student on Friday with her info, her classes, and some of the grades for the year and it took less than 20 minutes. FOR ALL OF IT!!

Plus, they are coming out with upgrades that will make it even cooler. I really do love it. Just thought I'd let you know again! ;-)

 

I Am Second Review

Have you heard of I Am Second? I saw a video some time ago and loved it. It was honest, simple, and very moving. It was an Olympic athlete talking about the adversities and struggles in his life and how he managed to get through them by God's Grace and leaning on God despite his circumstances.

I loved it.

It is still one of my favorite videos on the I Am Second website. I have watched it several times and am moved each time I watch it. One of the reasons is that I watched Scott Hamilton skate while I was growing up and was impressed by his skating but also his attitude. He always made me smile.

Years later watching the video he made for I Am Second I was impressed with him yet again. His candor about his mother's cancer, his health problems, and other things moved me in a different way than just watching him skate. He was simply sitting there in a chair and being honest about his struggles and how God walked him through them.

It is beautiful.

I watched Bethany Hamilton's video and loved it as well as a few others. There are so many to choose from that I honestly haven't been able to watch them all! They are categorized by the issue they talk about so you can cross reference something you are dealing with and find a video to encourage you.

Poison Ivy Update

Oh my goodness. The last three + weeks have been awful. The poison ivy ended up getting pretty stinking bad. It covered our entire bodies. Seriously. I am not kidding. It was bad.

It took 1 dose of oral steroids(normal strength), a steroid shot (strong), another round of super strong oral steroids, an antibiotic, and an super strong antihistamine to knock it out.

But it's still not gone. Well the poison ivy is. Wait...there was in fact poison ivy and poison oak that we got into, just wanted to clear that up.

We ended up getting a secondary infection in our skin from the many blisters. So now the blisters are gone but we have a rash covering a good portion of us that is red, scaly, dry, and itchy. What fun!
